Carbohydrates are the most important nutrient for exercising muscles. Adequate amounts of carbohydrates are essential not only for muscular performance but for the brain and central nervous system. The principal functions of carbohydrates are:
- serve as the primary energy source for working muscles. - ensure that the the brain and nervous system function properly. - help the body use fat more efficiently. (from the American Council on Exercises Personal Trainer Manual)
